Advancing artistry and technology, ‘Become a Guardian of Al Wasl’ invited visitors to create their astronaut avatar and see themselves beamed onto the monumental Al Wasl Dome through 252 projectors.
Creative Idea: AIM’s creative direction connected children & families with Expo 2020’s vision while acknowledging the importance of International Exhibitions as global gatherings dedicated to finding solutions to the challenges of our times. By ‘Becoming a Guardian of Al Wasl’, audiences participated in Expo’s quest to protect our planet, generating a dynamic story that evolved with each visitor who interacted with it.
Technological Innovation shaping the experience: Early in the process, a creative decision was made to use real faces to generate each avatar – a powerful differentiator from other digital experiences. Using facial recognition software, image capture and real-time rendering integrated via 252 projectors, participants could see their own likeness beamed up to 15 storeys high on Al Wasl Dome. The interaction became all the more meaningful as their avatars explored new frontiers, activated solar power, removed space junk and cooperated with others across a virtual cosmos.
