Annual light art festival celebrating 80 years of liberation in the Netherlands, showcasing 11 unique installations by global and local artists across Apeldoorn’s historic royal sites.
The Royal Light Festival aims to celebrate Apeldoorn’s transition from winter to spring through an immersive event highlighting light, heritage, and community. The 2025 theme, “Freedom,” commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Netherlands’ liberation in World War II, providing a meaningful narrative.
Objectives include creating an emotional connection between visitors and Apeldoorn’s royal and natural heritage; attracting over 30,000 visitors to boost local tourism and economy; involving local businesses and cultural institutions; promoting sustainability and innovation in public art; enhancing community pride and cultural visibility; and linking Paleis Het Loo, a historic landmark with 450,000+ annual visitors, to the city centre to encourage wider exploration.
In 2025, the Netherlands marks 80 years of freedom since the end of World War II. Apeldoorn, deeply affected during the occupation, honoured this milestone with the Royal Light Festival. The theme “Freedom” shaped the entire experience: eleven light installations told the story of oppression, liberation, and the ongoing value of freedom. Visitors walked a route of symbolic artworks: arches of light, open doors, and connected lines. Each inviting reflection. An audio tour added historical context and personal voices.
Every piece asked: what does freedom mean to you today? The blend of art, heritage, and technology created a layered experience. It honoured the past, celebrated the present, and reminded us that freedom is fragile and precious. For five nights, Apeldoorn became an open-air museum of light and meaning.
