UK – Troxy celebrates 80th birthday with King Kong
On September 10, industry professionals and local residents came to
the legendary Troxy to celebrate the east London venue’s 80th anniversary. From Limehouse DLR station, giant whitewashed footprints led them to the doors of Troxy, giving them a clue of what was to come.
Inside the Art Deco venue’s doors, caterers Party Ingredients provided drinks and a selection of pies, hot dogs and curries for guests, before they were given the chance to pose with King Kong in a 1930s photo booth.
The evening’s entertainment began with a performance by London-based French singer Benoit Viellefon and His Orchestra with the Swing Patrol Dancers, before opera singer Le Gateau Chocolat took to the stage.
Visitors then set down to a game of musical bingo, in tribute to the venue’s Mecca Bingo days in the nineties.
The evening also featured Troxy’s Wurlitzer theatre pipe organ – the largest in Europe – which has recently been refurbished.
Gourmet popcorn and a pick and mix stall were later set up for the screening of the original King Kong film – the first movie shown when Troxy opened as a cinema in 1933.
Will Poole, events and compliance manager at Troxy, said: “We had a fantastic night and the different elements of the evening worked really well together to show how much the venue has developed over the last eight decades. From opening as a cinema back in 1933 to becoming a rehearsal space for operatic performers and now one of the largest event destinations in London, Troxy’s unique history will always remain central to what we do.”
