ITALY – Wheatfield by Artist Agnes Denes Opens in Milan’s Porta Nuova
The project also includes a vegetable garden with an orchard of 4,000 square meters, built in the Isola neighborhood, to raise awareness on respect for nature and biodiversity, fully in line with the central theme of Expo Milano 2015.
Saturday, April 11th Giuseppe Sala , the Commissioner for the Government of Italy for Expo Milano 2015, presided over the opening of the “Wheatfield”, the land art work by American artist Agnes Denes consisting of a 50,000 square-meter field, sown with wheat. It is located between Milan’s Isola neighborhood and the futuristic skyscrapers of Porta Nuova .
The ceremony, celebrated on Via De Castilla in Milan, included not only the presence of Commissioner Sala but was also attended by Filippo Del Corno (Councillor for Culture for the Municipality of Milan), Kelly Russell (Director of the Foundazione Riccardo Catella) and Beatrice Trussardi (Director of the Fondazione Nicola Trussardi). The field was sown with wheat and alfalfa by more than 5,000 people on February 28th, and was opened daily to the public on Saturday. A walk down its path will allow visitors to see the growth of plants up to their full maturity, when the wheat will be cut and celebrated in a big harvest festival scheduled for mid-July.
The initiative, created by the artist for the first time in the heart of Manhattan in 1982, is today the centerpiece of the project “MiColtivo. The Green Circle“. It’s a path dedicated to urban agriculture promoted by Fondazione Riccardo Catella , Fondazione Nicola Trussardi and Confagricoltura which also includes a vegetable garden with an orchard of 4,000 square meters, built in the Isola neighborhood, to raise awareness on respect for nature and biodiversity, fully in line with the central theme of Expo Milano 2015 “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life“.
