The Event

The first free urban campsite created for IED in collaboration with Milan City Council and Milanosport, conceived to make designweek accessible to young people from over 30 different countries.

Design Week is a major international event, a not-to-be-missed opportunity to get to know the latest developments in the sector, but above all it is a moment of exchange and encounter, it offers opportunities for growth and training, and therefore for students it is a particularly attractive and popular event. Milan, unfortunately not very accessible from an economic point of view for a young target group, during this week becomes an even more unattainable destination. During Design Week in Milan, in fact, accommodation can increase disproportionally, even more than 200%. The aim of the event is to respond to this inconvenience by making the Design week (and thus the design heritage more democratic) accessible to as many young people of international origin as possible in order to contribute to the large-scale knowledge of this heritage. The project aims to provide an opportunity for students to stay in the city for free.

The glitch is the disturbance, the error, the bug from which an unexpected advantage can arise, the anomaly that generates an opportunity: from this idea was born the Glitch Camp, an urban camp, totally free, in the heart of the city. To realise it together with IED, we involved the Municipality of Milan and Milanosport, with whom we identified the Centro Sportivo Cappelli, a sports centre currently in use that is perfectly connected to the city’s neuralgic areas (Tibaldi railway link, tram 15 towards the Duomo, bus 90/91 towards Tortona). The sports centre has offered its facility, football pitch and toilets. A call to design schools was opened to receive applications from students, who registered through a portal. The camp was open from 15 to 21 April, and guests could stay for a maximum of 2 nights, in order to encourage turnover and give as many people as possible the chance to take advantage of the opportunity.
