UK – Giant Monopoly board takes over Trafalgar Square for the London Games Festival
The huge board was set up to launch the London Games Festival, which runs from April 1–10th.
A giant Monopoly board full of video game references appeared in Trafalgar Square: the activity was part of London Games Festival, which kicked off on Friday, April 1st and thata will run until April 10th.
The Monopoly board was 15m² and was customised to tell the history of video games in the UK, from the computer boom of the 1980s, right through to modern-day Virtual Reality technology. Nothing was missing: from life-sized statues of playing pieces such as a cat and automobile, to a digital dice in the Festival app so that people could walk the board themselves.
Members of the public were invited to complete a round of the board to learn more about key figures and dates in the gaming industry, and it proved a popular photography opportunity for many passersby.
“We wanted to create something that was visually exciting and could tell people the history of games in the UK and the great role the UK has played in shaping video games as a medium”, said the festival’s director, Michael French.
The London Games Festival includes 32 events in total, such as consumer expo Rezzed and the BAFTAs Video Game Awards.
