PORTUGAL – One million to watch tall ships
What do Alexander Von Humboldt, Christian Radich, Georg Stage, Jolie Brise and Lord Nelson have in common? These are all sailboat names, many of them large, joining the 60th edition of The Tall Ships Races.
The competition, held in 1956 for the first time, brings Torbay, UK, and the Portuguese capital together, in order to keep large sailing ships traditions alive. Six decades later, and given the success of the past editions editions, Lisbon expects to host from 22th July, at the new cruise terminal, between Santa Apolónia and Praça do Comércio, 50 large to 25 ships, 3,500 crew members from a variety of countries, and about one million visitors.
In addition to promoting sailing every year, there are hundreds of young people entering the different ships crews cultural exchange and entertainment, with on board visits and concerts. Moreover, each leg of The Tall Ships Races is an opportunity for brands to get in contact with their public.
In the Lisbon village, the tall ships will be available, for example, for “gala dinners, product presentations, business kicks off, meetings, charm actions, teambuildings or incentives,” explained the organisers in a statement.
Also according to the organisation, in 2012, when the race previously went through Portugal, only the crew of The Tall Ships Races, at the time little more than 2,500, had a positive effect on the national economy of more than half a million Euros.
The Tall Ships Races will join the cities of Antwerp, Lisbon, Cadiz and Coruña. The 60 Portuguese round is coorganised by Aporvela Portuguese Association of Sail Training, the Lisbon City Council, the Lisbon Port Authority and the Lisbon Cruise Terminals.
