ITALY – THE 20TH MEDITERRANEAN GAMES TARANTO 2026 CELEBRATE THE REGION WITH OPENING AND CLOSING CEREMONIES PRODUCED BY G2 EVENTI (CASTA DIVA GROUP)
Through two complementary formats—ranging from the solemn, narrative tone of the opening to the collective, participatory celebration of the final party—the agency orchestrated a grand production machine capable of showcasing local talent and uniting 26 nations under the banner of dialogue and entertainment. Combining institutional moments, high-profile musical performances, and visually striking set designs, the two-part event celebrated local identity while bringing together delegations from 26 countries.
A spectacular journey that successfully blended the ancient historical memory of a thousand-year-old region with a vision of openness, celebration, and the future: the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 20th Mediterranean Games Taranto 2026, conceived and produced by G2 Eventi (a Casta Diva Group company) under the creative direction of Francesco Paolo Conticello and artistic direction of Angelo Bonello, transformed the Erasmo Iacovone Stadium into a premier stage for Mediterranean sport and culture.
OPENING CEREMONY: “THE MYTH BECOMES THE FUTURE”
The myth came back to life, and this time, it looked to the future. This was the central theme of the Opening Ceremony of the 20th Mediterranean Games Taranto 2026, which transformed the Erasmo Iacovone Stadium into a massive open-air theater on Friday, August 21st, showcasing the history, identity, and contemporary energy of Taranto and the Mediterranean.
The event engaged 16,500 spectators present at the stadium and reached a total television audience of 973,000 viewers (7.1% share), confirming the ceremony’s ability to elevate an international sporting event into a cultural and spectacular narrative reaching far beyond the arena walls.
Developing the concept “The myth becomes the future,” the Opening Ceremony built a narrative where memory was not celebrated as something static, but became a living medium capable of speaking to the present and pointing toward the future.
Taking the stage were:
- Simone Grande, performing the Italian National Anthem (Inno di Mameli) accompanied by the Orchestra della Magna Grecia.
- Mietta, debuting an unreleased track.
- Al Bano, delivering an original rendition of Nel Sole.
- Francesco Fratini on trumpet.
- Christian Pace, featured in a solo dance performance.
- Serena Brancale, performing a medley of her most iconic hits.
The production’s complexity was powered by over 70 performers and a 300-person team of technicians and production professionals. Together, they brought to life a spectacular stage mechanism using a deeply contemporary visual language made of light design, special effects, live performances, drones, and advanced technology. The choreography was signed by Thomas Signorelli, costumes were designed by Maria Sabato, and original music was composed by Formisanoff – Merlo Recording Studio.
The artistic dimension seamlessly intertwined with institutional and international elements. As roughly 4,000 athletes from 26 countries participated, the delegations paraded in front of the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and other institutional dignitaries and international representatives. The sporting dimension was thus reconnected to its deepest meaning: not just competition, but a vehicle for connection, respect, cooperation, and cross-cultural dialogue.
For G2 Eventi and Casta Diva Group, delivering the ceremony represents another major milestone in consolidating their expertise in designing and producing complex, large-scale international events and ceremonies, following their work on the Closing Ceremony of the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games.

Our goal was to pay homage to Taranto and Puglia by leveraging the richness and talent of this land without reducing them to mere stereotypes. The final result and the public acclaim showed that we achieved our objectives. This show wouldn’t have made sense in any other city in the world, and we hope we conveyed our desire to revive an ancient memory that can—and must—guide the future through the values of sport, dialogue, and peaceful coexistence.”
CLOSING CEREMONY: “MEDITERRANEAN IN FESTA”
Following the success of the Opening Ceremony, the Erasmo Iacovone Stadium hosted the final act of the 20th Mediterranean Games Taranto 2026 with the Closing Ceremony, titled “Mediterraneo in Festa” (Mediterranean Party).
While the inauguration on August 21st staged “The myth becomes the future” through a theatrical and identity-driven narrative inspired by the city’s ancient roots, the Closing Ceremony shifted tones to become a collective, interactive celebration. With competition concluded and national divisions cast aside, the evening transformed into a massive party dedicated to the athletes, who entered the field united as a single team to celebrate the values of sportsmanship, peaceful coexistence, and togetherness.
The emotional artistic and musical journey unfolded in a stadium transformed into a “contemporary piazza” by designer Luigi Maresca, where traditional Puglian illumination art (luminarie) was reinterpreted through cutting-edge LED scenery.
The evening’s performance lineup included:
- Rossella Brescia, delivering a touching monologue on the values of brotherhood among nations, set to the rhythmic beat of Dominique Antonacci’s tambourine.
- Terraròss, bringing the folkloric energy of pizzica and tarantella to the stage, reimagined in a contemporary style.
- Serena Autieri, paying tribute to classic Puglian and Italian songwriting with a moving rendition of Domenico Modugno’s Meraviglioso, accompanied by the Orchestra della Magna Grecia under the baton of Maestro Piero Romano.
- Karima, performing an unreleased track composed by Maestri Roberto Molinelli and Piero Romano alongside the Orchestra.
- Aktitude, a local Taranto dance crew of over 40 young dancers, executing a massive coreographed routine.
- Moses Concas, showcasing harmonica virtuosity on Nel blu dipinto di blu.
- Rockin’1000 & Mille, teaming up for a high-energy rock performance of Franco Battiato’s Up Patriots to Arms.
The festive atmosphere carried through the Parade of Participating Countries, set to an original DJ set by Salento producer Populous, before transitioning to the official Olympic protocol moments. These included the entrance of the Italian Flag—escorted by the Italian Navy and led by flag bearer Mia Zottoli (Miss World Italy 2026)—official anthems, institutional speeches, and the ceremonial handover, culminating in the lowering of the flag and its transfer to the Mayor of Pristina (Kosovo), host city of the 21st edition of the Mediterranean Games.
The event was broadcast live on RaiSport and deferred on Rai 2. The executive and technical operations were managed by Executive Producer Luca Pancaldi and General Manager Fabrizio Minasi, with Aktitude’s choreography signed by Thomas Signorelli and musical direction by Formisanoff.

“From a creative standpoint, the best challenge was building two radically different ceremonies while ensuring they felt like parts of the same overarching story. The Opening needed to show the Mediterranean who Taranto is; the Closing needed to hand the stage back to the athletes and turn that same stadium into a boundary-breaking celebration.

Behind every image delivered to the audience lie months of work, thousands of decisions, solved problems, long nights, and people who never stopped believing in the project. Creatives, producers, technicians, artists, directors, choreographers, musicians, logistics, administration: every single detail was the result of a collective effort. When the lights go down, the emotions remain, but above all, the privilege of having done it together.”

“If the Opening had a cinematic, narrative language to be watched with reverence, the Closing spoke a purely musical, visceral language: it was a show to be lived, sung, and danced together. We consciously chose to open this international stage not only to established names, but also to emerging local talents from the region who hadn’t yet had the chance to perform at this scale.
A major event can simply import artists and produce entertainment, or it can choose to leave a lasting legacy in the community that hosts it. We chose the second path. Giving a young artist from Taranto an international platform fosters belonging and pride, showing them that their passion can become a profession and a real path toward personal autonomy. We tailored a bespoke suit for Taranto, and our hope is that the city enjoyed this celebration and recognized itself in the story of its own extraordinary identity.”
