GERMANY – 27KM STAGES EMOTIONAL EU CAMPAIGN ‘VOICES OF HUMANITY’
A cinematic plea for courage, humanity, and hope — for the European Commission, 27KM partnered with VML Copenhagen to portray three moving stories of women aid workers in Gaza, Ukraine, and Uganda.
What compels people to remain in a war zone — to help others? This question lies at the heart of “Voices of Humanity,” a Europe-wide awareness campaign by the European Commission. Its emotional core is a documentary film produced by the Creative Content Studio 27KM, commissioned by VML Copenhagen and the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO).
Directed by Kai Sehr, the 16-minute film spotlights three EU-supported women aid workers in Gaza, Ukraine, and Uganda, whose daily lives are defined by compassion, courage, and moral strength. “These stories are not about flight, but about determination — about people who stay to save lives,” says Sehr. “Encounters like these change the way you think about courage.”
Three stories, three perspectives
The film takes viewers into the realities of humanitarian work: In Gaza, the camera follows a psychosocial counsellor who moves between bombardments and relief missions — living with fear, loss, and under siege. In Ukraine, it follows an EU programme manager who is rebuilding education and healthcare infrastructure despite ongoing attacks. And in Uganda, it documents an education officer giving refugee children from Sudan hope and structure. The powerful images make tangible what the principles of European aid mean at their core: living humanity, acting impartially, remaining neutral — and deciding independently, even where life itself is at stake. The work will be shown across Europe on social media and YouTube, as well as at film festivals and in selected cinemas — making “Voices of Humanity” a cinematic testament to lived humanity in the face of danger.
Production between risk and resilience
Building on VML Copenhagen’s campaign concept, the creative approach was further developed jointly. 27KM independently managed production — from visual concept through production and post-production to music. Filming took the team into active crisis regions — a logistical, emotional, and human exception. Weeks of preparation were required to secure locations, brief local partners, and devise safety and evacuation plans together with the European Commission. “No insurer covers a project like this; every journey is a risk,” says Tim Beblo, Executive Producer at 27KM. “We had to prioritise the crew’s safety above all — with local partners, appropriate accommodation, and psychological support before and after the shoot.”
