AUSTRIA – ESTRO 2014 and EMTC 2016 to be held in Vienna
About 5,000 delegates are expected to attend the five-day event of the European Society for Radiotherapy & Oncology, which will hold off its 33rd annual meeting at Reed Messe Wien from April 4-8, 2014. 
Richard Pötter, head of the University Clinic of Radiation Therapy at the Medical University of Vienna / Vienna General Hospital, comments: “The structure of ESTRO conferences reflects the interdisciplinary nature of radio oncology with the interplay of medicine, physics and biology. Austrian research achievements in these three disciplines need not shy comparison, and this congress and its milieu will enable us to demonstrate this. I am thinking here not only of our specialized audience, but also of our patients.”
Professor Dietmar Georg, head of Medical Radiophysics at the University Clinic of Radiation Therapy adds: “Vienna has played a special role in the history of radiation therapy with the world’s first treatment by Leopold Freund in 1896. Staging such an important event in Vienna is also extremely significant for radio oncology in Austria.”
Also, about 400 participants will travel to Vienna for the 10th European Music Therapy Conference from July 5-9, 2016. It will take place at the University of Music and Performing Arts.
Monika Geretsegger, chairperson of the Austrian Professional Association of Music Therapists and partly responsible for this successful acquisition, underlines the interactive approach: “Vienna has a tradition of music therapy education going back over 50 years, so against this background the congress will be devoted to dialogue – in therapeutic treatment, between different fields in theory, practice and research, in scientific exchange, and of course between the international delegates.”
“These two congress acquisitions underscore once again the importance of Vienna in the world of science and research,” explains Christian Mutschlechner, Director of the Vienna Convention Bureau, which supported the acquisition of both events right from the word go.
The two congresses will generate some 22,000 bednights for the Vienna hospitality sector, and contribute around 12 million euros to GDP.
